Schneider Electric releases digital economy and climate impact report – PV Magazine USA


The report outlines the expected climate impacts from increased electricity demand in the IT sector, and the way Schneider Electric introduces new technologies to meet efficiency needs.

Boston-based Schneider Electric released a report outlining its vision for how digital and smart applications will operate in the coming years.

The report predicted a nearly 50% increase in IT-sector related electricity demand by 2030. Despite this sharp increase, Schneider Electric said the decarbonization effort would limit emissions to a 26% increase over the same period.

This report focused on the growth in edge computing, explaining that these systems are expected to have lower efficiencies than hyperscale data centers.

The report echoed some of the problems posed by the high energy use of cryptocurrency mining, and call for renewable energy To decarbonize the area.

Schneider Electric recommends continued efforts to achieve efficiencies on both the IT and energy sides, at both the component and system levels.

Schneider Electric also introduced what it claims to be one of the industry’s most compact 3 kW uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), dubbed APC Smart-UPS Ultra. The device boosts power density by 2.4 times compared to existing technology, Schneider said.

Lithium-ion UPS frees up space for edge applications, and reduces time on maintenance and operating expenses. The use of lithium-ion batteries represents an improvement over typical lead-acid batteries, extending the life of the storage unit by 8–10 years.

The company said it has a flexible mounting system, which allows for rack, tower, wall or ceiling positioning, potentially freeing up space in IT applications. EcoStruxure, a proprietary cloud-based monitoring system, aims to optimize performance and allow remote monitoring.
