Samsung and AMD: Android’s best effort to give you the iPhone?

Let me preface this by saying that this piece is not going to talk about the rivalry between Android and the iPhone, which is to tell you which one is better. In fact, the answer to this question will always be subjective.

However, it cannot be denied that there are some areas in which one side has always dominated the other. While for Android, this will be areas such as customization, notification management as well as a more adventurous approach to design and experimentation, Apple’s strengths have always been felt in three key areas – software support, raw processing power, and fixed Literally, “ecosystem”.

Let’s establish that “copying” is exactly what we’ve got of having a great software experience on both iOS and Android. The two operating systems constantly borrow features from each other, and it really is fantastic! No one will want to go back to the original iOS, or say, Samsung’s TouchWiz from back in the day.

It is the same when it comes to CPU and GPU power. If we didn’t have Qualcomm, Exynos, Kirin, and Apple’s “A” series competition, the market would be completely dominated by one company that’s never good for our favorite things – progress and innovation. Anyway… for the sake of this story, let’s leave out Apple’s ecosystem and focus primarily on the “software support and processor” area of ​​interest.

Software support on Android: bridging the (big) gap

Everyone has heard of great software support on Android… “great” – meaning bad, and “bad” meaning really bad.

Now, before I trigger anyone, let me tell you that I’ve been using Android for years and love it despite its shortcomings. Currently, I’m using an iPhone with the Huawei P30 Pro, which is still going strong despite Huawei’s insatiable state.

but! That doesn’t change the fact that it received Android 11 almost eight months after Google’s software was originally released! eight months!!! I’ve been there before – it happens every year. The new Android version comes out, I watch it, I appreciate it from afar, and I move on – because if I get caught, I’ll convince myself that buying a new phone is a good idea, because I know. that my software will be out of date for some time…

Well, Samsung is planning to do something about it! it is now Confirmed that the South Korean tech giant will start supporting some current and future devices for 3-4 years with software and security updates. That’s on par with Google’s own Pixel devices, promising at least three years of Android version updates and at least three years of security updates. In fact, Samsung’s promise tops Google when it comes to security updates.

More recently, OnePlus also jumped into the same train compartment, Three years of software updates and four years of security updates are promised for flagship devices. While it’s certainly no match for Apple’s (at least) 5 years of software support for the iPhone, with security updates often reaching devices released 7-8 years ago, it’s a step forward! This certainly doesn’t change the fact that specific devices (often from carriers) can take significantly longer to update than unlocked models. That also doesn’t change the fact that here we’re talking about the only two brands that swear by their software support game.

What about the rest of the Android phone? Currently, most of them stick to the usual two years of software updates and three years of security updates (if you’re lucky). Not to mention the phones that… aren’t flagships. The chances of getting their blessings are even less, whereas such devices iPhone SE (2020) will continue to receive timely updates until at least 2025!

Overall, the gap has narrowed, but it has not ended. Nevertheless, the efforts of Samsung and OnePlus are commendable. Research shows that most people are likely to buy a new phone in about three years after buying their current one, so it looks like Android makers are trying to follow that rule.

Samsung and AMD to the rescue of Android: monumental leap or momentary edge?

The Samsung and AMD/Nvidia partnership was rumored for some time, but it never happened. Well, now, it’s pretty inevitable that Samsung and AMD are going to collaborate on Samsung’s “next flagship product.” Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like it’s going to be the flagship foldable – Galaxy Z Fold 3, but possibly the Galaxy S21 successor – the Galaxy S22.

The reveal was revealed during Samsung’s Exynos 2100 event in January and has been a hot topic of discussion ever since. It’s important to note that Samsung said that AMD’s GPU is coming to the “next flagship processor” made by the company — not the next flagship product — whether it’s a phone, tablet or laptop.

The good news is that this new CPU and GPU combo benchmarks higher than Qualcomm’s current Snapdragon 888 and certainly better than the Exynos 2100. There is also a possibility that it is going to beat Qualcomm’s next flagship SoC.

Furthermore, the alleged benchmark shared by IceUniverse uses the A77 architecture, while the Exynos 2100 – Samsung’s current flagship chip – uses the A78. This means that benchmarks based on the Exynos 2200 tested in collaboration with AMD may not be the final look of the CPU and GPU combo!

Why a better CPU and GPU matters to you:

It may seem very obvious at first, but there is definitely more to it. a better CPU and The GPU combo doesn’t just make your smartphone “faster”. While this is certainly very much true, the arguably more significant benefits come in all other shapes and sizes:

  • Camera quality and performance for photos, and especially for videos with HDR, stabilization, and support for newer and more capable camera sensors. This is mainly aided by the CPU.
  • Strong CPU and GPU will make your phone last longer as it will be easier to maintain new software if you have a powerful device.
  • Better gaming performance with higher continuous frame rates

Don’t forget that the main function of the GPU is to assist the CPU with tasks that are related to “performance” stuff. AMD has an established record of providing high-performance graphics for all types of devices. Of course, especially with the Ryzen series and their graphics, which give Intel a lot of trouble.

The RDNA architecture, which is said to be used for the next Exynos GPU, is also found in similar devices that require a lot of graphics power. More precisely, it’s probably going to be rDNA2, which is more power-efficient than the first iteration.
AMD’s RDNA is featured in devices such as the Sony Playstation 5 and some desktops. Of course, we’re not going to have the same GPU in the next Samsung flagship, but it will be made of stuff, so to say. The architecture will be similar.

It’s also good to note that it’s AMD GPUs (and likely future versions too) Expected to be used in laptops and tablets.
