Qt for Android Automotive Tech Preview Released


It’s no secret that Google’s Android Automotive OS (AAOS) has rocked the automotive sector; Designed to offer openness, customization and scale to automotive information systems and key units, its adoption in production vehicles continues to grow as it prepares to further disrupt the industry.

While AAOS provides an excellent foundation for connected IVI development, many automotive manufacturers struggle with limited designer tooling and lack of 3D support when developing Android-based HMIs. Our goal is to empower automotive manufacturers to maintain brand recognition and use advanced 3D graphics on their Android home screens, along with the countless other benefits that the Qt framework and design tooling offer.

Developing an IVI system with Qt for Android Automotive

The Qt Android Automotive OS Technology Preview (QAA) is now available to all commercial Qt device manufacturing licensees. Qt for Android Automotive integrates the Qt Framework and UI Toolkit with Android Automotive Bindings, Android Bindings and Qt IVI Framework.

Try Example for Android Automotive

The Technical Preview ships with several examples you can use as a starting point for your development.

HVAC Example

HVAC UI is developed in Qt Design Studio, on Android Emulator running Android Automotive OS. The example UI is seamlessly linked with VHAL properties, such as fan speed, fan direction, temperature, AC on/off, max AC current, defroster, etc.

HVAC Zoned Example

The second HVAC example shows how to build an HVAC application that allows you to control multiple climate zones within a vehicle.

This example shows how to build a Qt Quick application that communicates with Android Automotive VHAL properties. It interacts with two VHAL parameters; AC On and Window Locked.

app lister example

This example demonstrates how to use Qt Android AppUtils to show a list of installed apps in an Android or Android Automotive device, and how to handle relevant events. The application UI is built using Qt Quick.
